Q&A with Sally Todd, President of City Women Network



City Women Network (CWN) is a vibrant community for senior professional women to connect, contribute and grow. CWN is a supporter of FV and has partnered with FV to host a number of events. One such event is FV and CWN’s Reverse Mentoring session which provides a learning opportunity for senior women and junior women to speak candidly about issues and opportunities at work. Sally Todd is a true friend of FV and a great support to the FV team. Below she sets out some advice to the next generation of senior business women.

What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you?

Closing the gender pay gap.

What is the best and worst decision you’ve ever made?

Joining Penrose, selling Penrose.

How do you motivate yourself and stay motivated?

Continuous learning.

If you could tell your younger self one thing you know about business now, what would it be?

Don’t over-analyse.

What’s an accomplishment that you are proudest of?

Earning a distinction for my MSc thesis “The re-emergence of a new technology: Neural Networks as a communications technology”.

Who is your role model, and why?

I don’t have a ‘role model’ per se. I like to keep evolving my thinking and take inspiration from different companies, disciplines and individuals including Marc Andreessen, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Atul Gawande, Sheryl Sandberg, Allbright.com.

What would be your advice for women who are building careers in the industry you work in?

From a content perspective, take full advantage of the capacity in the asset management industry for thinking time.

From a diversity perspective, take full advantage of the industry endeavours to level the playing field and be vocal.

What’s your own personal mantra?

Less is more.

What do you think makes a successful leader?

Consistency, anticipation, guts, personality .

Sally is  highly skilled in communications, corporate affairs and issues management with over 20 years’ experience providing trusted counsel to Boards, Senior Leaders, CEOs and CIOs. Sally has Extensive experience of developing complex investment marketing and communications strategies on market and brand positioning, reputation risk and corporate affairs, and actioning these to directly influence target internal and external stakeholder groups.

Sally is solution-focused and skilled at building, leading and mobilising highly effective teams to execute swiftly and purposefully. She has proven success as owner manager, growing and selling a successful advisory business.

Sally’s core skills are: asset management; hedge funds; alternative investments; crisis, issues and reputation management; leadership & counsel; media relations; corporate affairs; stakeholder engagement; brand protection, internal & external communications.
